The purpose of celebrating birthdays

It is interesting to know that the celebration of birthdays has a meaning and a purpose from ancient times. People feared evil spirits and it was believed that on birthdays of individuals, the evil spirits became more dangerous. In order to protect the person who becomes a year older on his/her birthday, people would come together and celebrate birthdays merrily surrounding the person with laughter and joy and this was believed to be the way protection is given from the evil spirits.

It is believed that the celebration of birthdays started more than 2000 years ago. On these birthdays, the well wishes to the person whose birthday is celebrated, was considered to be the best gift. Over time, the tradition changed to giving birthday gifts.

The tradition of celebrating birthdays, now, is common in almost all parts of the world. Celebration of birthdays is similar in some countries, but in other countries, the birthdays have a ritual following based on the beliefs and cultural traditions of the people in those parts of the world. Whatever be the tradition or custom, the intent of celebrating birthdays is the same - good thoughts and well wishing for the upcoming year for the person celebrating their birthday.
